The Laboratory of Natural Flora of the GBS RAS is organized with the aim of studying the diversity of the flora of Russia and neighboring countries, developing theoretical foundations and methods of plant introduction, their protection and practical use. During the existence of the laboratory of natural flora, a team of employees managed to create living collections of plants in the natural and climatic conditions of Moscow, reflecting the diversity of the flora of Russia and neighboring countries. To date, these collections are unique in the world practice of introduction research.

Research directions

Creation and maintenance of botanical and geographical collections

The concept and principles of creating expositions of plants of natural flora based on the ecological and historical method of introduction were laid down by the founder and the first head of the Department of flora, Professor M.V. Kultiasov. The improvement of the ecological and phytocenotic method in plant introduction and some issues of the theory of introduction research were subsequently further developed in the works of N.V. Trulevich and A.K. Skvortsov. As a result of a systematic survey of the flora of Russia, 5725 plant species have been introduced. Currently, there are 2,275 specimens of 1,425 species from 513 genera and 115 families in the collection of the Flora department. Of these, 69 species are listed in the Red Book of Russia, 21 species are in the Red Books of Central Asian states.
