Abstract
The applicability of the recently proposed CDM theory of counterion spin relaxation in polyelectrolyte solutions [Halle, Wennerstrom & Piculell, J. Phys. Chem. 88, 2482 (1984)] is extended to low degrees of polymerization. Polyion end effects on the counterion distribution and dynamics are described in the spheroidal-cell model of Bratko & Dolar [J. Chem. Phys. 80, 5782 (1984)]. The extended theory is applied to 23Na spin relaxation data from saltfree solutions of sodium poly (styrenesulfonate) and it is found that the available data can be explained by a model in which polyions of length 20–100nm reorient as fully extended, rigid bodies.
