Abstract

Mechanical metamaterials have attracted significant attention for their distinctive properties and functionalities, which stem from their rationally designed structures. Among them, auxetic metamaterials stand out due to their negative Poisson’s ratio, which endows them with outstanding mechanical properties for applications in biomedicine, protective devices, vehicles, sensors, and actuators. To further advance the development of auxetic metamaterials in practical applications, a comprehensive review that summarizes previous studies is essential. This review categorizes auxetic metamaterials based on the fundamental topology-property relationships and explores their deformation mechanisms. Fabrication methods and mechanical properties of auxetic metamaterials are also systematically outlined, along with their various applications. Moreover, the review discusses the challenges and prospects for auxetic metamaterials, with the aim of inspiring future innovations in structural designs and improvements in practical applications.
