Abstract
The synthesis and full characterization of the title heterocycle are presented. BRDT (1) can be studied in its three stable oxidation states: diradical, radical action and dication. Of these, the diradical exists as an oligomer in solution (compelling evidence for a dimer is presented). E.s.r. spectroscopy of the twolower oxidation states revealed, unexpectedly, but in accord with molecular orbital calculations, that in the radical cation the spin is fully delocalized, whereas in the diradical it is partially localized on only the nitrogen atoms. Coproportionation of the diradical with the dication in a ratio of 3:1 produced the first highly conducting solid based on BBDT.
