Spectral studies of some octahedral iron(III) complexes with nitrogen donors

The preparations of Mossbauer, electronic and infrared spectra of the compounds Fe(imidazole) 6 X 2 (X = Cl, Br, I, or ClO 4 ) are reported. These complexes contain the hexakis-imidazoleiron(II) cation but similar studies on the compounds Fe(pyridine) 6 X 2 (X = Br, I, or NCO) show that these are of the type [Fepy 4 X 2 ].2py The magnetic moments and Mossbauer and electronic spectra of the compounds FeL 4 (NCO) 2 (L = pyridine, 4-methylpyridine, or isoquinoline show that these differ from their isothiocyanate and isoselenocyanate analogues in having the 5 B 2g level as the ground state.
