Ethyl 4-aryl-2,4-dioxobutanoates undergo stereoselective intramolecular Wittig reaction with a vinyltriphenylphosphonium salt to yield cyclobutene derivatives, which undergo electrocyclic ring-opening reactions in boiling toluene to produce highly electron-deficient 1,3-dienes.
