Abstract
From a search for high-temperature oxidation-resistant materials, the development of tetraboron silicide, B/sub 4/Si, is reported. This silicide of boron can be prepared in large quantities. Shapes fabricated from B/sub 4/Si by powder metallurgical techniques have withstood oxidation in air for over 100 hours at 137O deg C. Thermal shock resistance was displayed when no cracks were observed upon removal from 1370 deg C to room temperatures on numerous occasions. The ceramic properties of B/sub 4/Si are being investigated. (B.O.G.)
