The mechanism of coupling of aryl halides by nickel catalysts is found to proceed through a chain reaction involving Ni(0), Ni(I), Ni(II), and Ni(III) complexes. The propagation steps include the oxidative addition of PhBr to the electrogenerated unsaturated Ni 0 (dppe). The resulting PhNi II Br(dppe) is reduced to PhNi I (dppe) via a single electron uptake
