Cyclopentadien (I) und Cyclohexadien (IV) werden beim Bestrahlen mit einer Quecksilberhochdrucklampe (Pyrexfilter) unter einer Sauerstoffatmosphare in Methanol in Gegenwart eines Photosensibilisators und danach mit Thioharnstoff als Reduktionsmittel zu cis-2-Cyclopenten-1,4-diol (II) bzw. cis-2-Cyclohexen-1,4-diol (V) umgesetzt.
