Abstract
The possibility of producing high-quality ingots of an advanced biomedical Ti–20 at % Nb–5 at % Ta alloy by melting in an argon arc furnace and subsequent homogenizing annealing is demonstrated. The microhardness, phase composition, and structure of the ingots are studied. After melting, the structure of the alloy is shown to be partially dendritic; it forms as a result of the temperature gradient induced by cooling of an ingot in a copper mold and consists of β-Ti with traces of α'-phase precipitates. Annealing of the alloy at 900°C leads to the destruction of the dendritic structure, leveling the chemical composition, and recrystallization. Upon annealing at 950°C, further grain growth and the appearance of an insignificant amount of the ω phase are observed.
