Regio- and diastereoselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones to 1-(methylideneamino)-1H-pyrrole-2,3-dione

Abstract
It was shown previously that ethyl 1-aryl-4,5-dioxo-2-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylates behave as dipolarophiles (through the polarized C=C bond) in [3 + 2]-cycloadditions to nitrones to produce substituted pyrrolo[3,2-d][1,2]oxazoles [1]. Reactions of nitrones with 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones possessing an additional functionality, in particular C=N bond, have not been reported so far. It is known that C=N dipolarophiles are capable of reacting with nitrones by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition pathway [2, 3].
