The laboratory staff conducts research in four main areas: 1 - The study of evolutionary relationships between groups of organisms reconstructed at different levels of organization; 2 - The study of time processes occurring in biological systems at different levels and on different time scales; 3 - The study of the ecological foundations of evolutionary processes; 4 - Analysis of genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure model vertebrate species of Northern Eurasia.

Research directions: 1 - The study of evolutionary (phylogenetic) relationships between groups of organisms (species, populations) reconstructed at different levels of organization – morphological, cytogenetic, molecular. Within the framework of this direction: - The degree of kinship of modern natural populations and the reconstruction of phylogenies and phylogenetic relationships in the evolution of animal species. - Morphological and genetic differentiation of taxa of varying degrees of phylogenetic proximity. 2 - The study of processes in time occurring in biological systems of different levels – from the organismal to the ecosystem – on time scales from the actual to the geological. Within the framework of this direction: - Restoration of the chronology of biological events in the paleontological annals of animals over the past 2.6 million years; - The relationship of ontogeny and phylogeny in the formation of morphological structures. 3 - The study of the ecological foundations of evolutionary processes In this area: - Variability in space and time as the basis of evolutionary processes - The contribution of natural and anthropogenic factors to the formation of animal biodiversity at different stages of the Quaternary period and to the maintenance of homeostasis of modern natural populations

The new laboratory includes employees who previously worked in the Laboratory of Historical Ecology, in a group led by Alexander Vasilyevich Borodin, and employees of the Population Cytogenetics group, led by Lidia Eduardovna Yalkovskaya. Material base: The laboratory staff has equipment for morphological, cytogenetic and molecular genetic studies, expedition equipment for field work aimed at collecting paleontological and neontological material. There are specially equipped rooms for temporary housing of animals (small mammals).
