The Laboratory of Geopolitical Studies of the IG RAS is a leading Russian research center in the field of political geography and international relations. Key areas of the laboratory's research: - geopolitical concepts and imperatives of Russia's changing geopolitical situation; - Russian borderland: socio-economic, geocultural and environmental challenges of the neighborhood; - the geopolitical picture of the world in the views of residents of the regions of Russia and neighboring countries and the impact of political discourse and other factors on it; - unrecognized states in the modern world and the former USSR: problems of neighborhood, geographical factors of development and legitimacy; - influence of geocultural and socio-political factors on the development of Russian regions; - migration and the growth of cultural diversity in major Russian cities.

Effects and functions of boundaries in the spatial organization of Russian society: country, region, municipality
The aim of the project is to show the isomorphism and interdependence of borders at different levels, to identify their impact on the spatial development of Russia, to analyze the functions, socio-economic and cultural-political effects. The specific task of the project is to explore the boundaries of different levels as normative (formal) institutions and as a set of social concepts and practices (informal institutions) using a single methodology.
