Смирнов Станислав Константинович

I am a mathematician with a broad range of interests across mathematics and its interactions with physics, biology, and other sciences. I have started as a student in geometric analysis and geometric measure theory as a student, later transitioning to complex analysis and dynamical systems during my doctoral studies. After becoming a professor, I expanded my research into probability theory and mathematical physics, while continuing my prior research.

I have made significant contributions across all these fields, perhaps most notably the rigorous proofs of conformal invariance for critical percolation and the Ising model in the plane—work that was recognized with the Fields Medal.

While I remain actively engaged in pure mathematics and mathematical physics, my interests extended recently to questions arising in neuroscience, biology, and artificial intelligence.

I am also deeply committed to education. Over the course of nearly forty years, I have taught at all levels—from middle school to postgraduate—and have contributed to curriculum development, educational materials, and science communication.

Beyond research, teaching and outreach, I am actively involved in the organization of scientific activities. I have organized numerous conferences, several times served as as scientific director and led multiple large-scale research grants. Since 2014, I am the Director of the Swiss National Center for Competence in Research SwissMAP, which is dedicated to fostering excellence in mathematics and theoretical physics at the national level.
