Cardiothoracic surgery registrar (NTN, East Midlands) and postdoctoral clinical academic at the University of Leicester, working at the interface of thoracic surgical oncology and translational cancer research.

My MD (Res) - Regulation of Mesothelioma Growth Kinetics and Prognosis (University of Leicester, 2026), supervised by Professor Dean A. Fennell - asked why pleural mesothelioma behaves so differently between patients who appear identical on conventional staging. Using 35-marker multiplex immunofluorescence and QuPath-based digital pathology across a surgical cohort of extended pleurectomy/decortication cases, with Boruta-SHAP feature selection and Cox proportional hazards modelling, that work identified stromal proliferation as the dominant adverse prognostic signal, characterised an EMT-dividing cell state as the most aggressive phenotype, and described an interaction between granzyme B and tumour proliferation relevant to immune checkpoint blockade response.

That work now runs in three directions:

- Pathobiology: Hippo/YAP, EMT and immune evasion in pleural malignancy, including gene fusion and DNA repair studies and long-read Nanopore sequencing of structural rearrangement in mesothelioma.

- Trial and translational research: investigator on studies spanning tumour phylogenetics and subclonal resistance (MEDUSA), national mesothelioma biobanking (MesoBANK), regional analgesia after thoracotomy (TOPIC-2) and pharmacological protection after one-lung ventilation (HARP-2), with co-authorship on early-phase therapeutic and immune-microenvironment studies.

- Outcomes, inequality and computation: survival and somatic driver mutation prevalence by population group in UK non-small cell lung cancer, and a first-author scoping review of artificial intelligence and machine learning in thoracic surgery.

Clinically I train across Glenfield Hospital and Nottingham City Hospital, with a developing robotic thoracic practice, a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education and an interest in quality improvement in surgical follow-up.

I am building a programme of work on the spatially resolved determinants of mesothelioma outcome, and welcome collaboration in spatial transcriptomics, computational pathology and immune-stromal biology in pleural disease.
