• Is a consulting civil engineer, former Chairman of Civil Engineering at the University of Baghdad and a former Cabinet Minister of Construction and Housing of Iraq (Profile on LinkedIn).
• He obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the College of Engineering of the University of Baghdad (BSc (1978), MSc (1982), PhD (1994)). Major: Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering), Minor: Structural Engineering. Doctorate Degree Thesis Title: Dynamic Impact – Contact Problems with Particular Reference to Porous Media, College of Engineering, University of Baghdad (1994). • He was a lecturer at the Department of Building and Construction of the University of Technology (Iraq) (August 1983- August 1986) where he gave lectures in Advanced Engineering Mathematics and Engineering Statistics. He supervised the soil mechanics laboratory work at the department and was later appointed as the Director of Construction Laboratories at the university.
• After that, he became a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Baghdad (September 1986 – June 2004) where he gave lectures in Soil Mechanics, Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Numerical Methods in Geotechnical Engineering, Advanced Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Site Investigations, Soil Dynamics, Constitutive Relationships and Advanced Soil Mechanics for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• While a professor (October 1994- June 2004), he supervised more than thirty M.Sc. and Ph.D. dissertations and theses at the University of Baghdad, the University of Technology, al-Nahrain University and the University of Kufa.
• He has more than seventy published research papers and authored two books in Arabic one in three and the second in four volumes entitled Soil Mechanics for Civil Engineers and Advanced Soil Mechanics Laboratory Testing, respectively, under the auspices of the University of Baghdad.
• He established a consulting engineering firm in Baghdad specializing in civil engineering works where different types of structures were designed and analyzed like residential and commercial buildings and large earth dams (December 1994 – June 2004).
• He is a Founding Member and first President of the Iraqi Geotechnical Society which lies under the umbrella of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (2001). Since 2005, he has been a member of International Technical Committee 207 on Soil-Structure Interaction.
• He was appointed as Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Baghdad (September 2000 – June 2004). Under his supervision, the Advanced Structural Mechanics Laboratory building was designed and established at the department.
• From June 2004 till May 2005, he was appointed as Minister of Construction and Housing of Iraq. While a Minister, he established the Iraq House Holding Fund and handled building, highway, bridge and housing construction schemes across the country.
• He is a registered Consulting Civil Engineer at the Iraqi Engineers Union, a Chartered Civil Engineer (UK), Fellow and President of the Iraq Group of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Fellow at the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK), a Member of the United Arab Emirates Society of Engineers, a Member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and a Member of the Project Management Institute.
• Through more than twenty years of work in engineering university education, he gave courses and lectures for hundreds of practicing civil engineers, contractors, consultants and government officials in Iraq.
• From January 2007 until May 2010, he was a Senior Project Engineer with Planar/ Halvorson and Partners working on the Central Market Re-Development Project of Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The project was a mega construction owned by Al-Dar PJSC consisting of three skyscrapers, one of which is currently the tallest in that city, and a podium building with a footprint area of 53000m2 and a total proposed built area of 700000m2. It is situated at the hub of the city.
• From August 2010 until June 2012, he took up the role of a Structural Design Manager at Parsons International Ltd. practicing at Abu Dhabi, UAE. Designs of various types of structures including schools, hospitals, high rise buildings, silos, residential developments, auditoriums, etc. were managed through all design phases starting from inception till construction and tendering. These included calculations, drawing submissions and relevant material specifications for these constructions.
