HELENA TRICALLOTIS HORTA

Archaeologist and Art Historian from the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Hungary (1981), Doctor Universitatis in Archeology (Prehistory) from the same university (1983), Doctor in History with a Mention in Ethnohistory from the University of Chile, study funded by a Scholarship ANID (2010). Since his return to Chile in 1990, he has dedicated himself to the research of art, iconography and pre-Hispanic archeology of the central-southern Andean area, with special emphasis on the visual systems of the diverse cultural developments of the Norte Grande of Chile. On these topics She has published scientific articles, disseminating the results of research carried out with financing from competitive funds (FONDECYT). She has also carried out dissemination in different settings (EXPLORA/CONICYT; One Thousand Researchers, One Thousand Classrooms Program; in-person and virtual talks for the general public, etc.), and as a teacher at the Andean School, an entity focused on the formation of the communities of San Pedro de Atacama on different topics of local cultural heritage. Regarding teaching, she has taught undergraduate and graduate classes at different universities (in Chile, Católica de Valparaíso, Adolfo Ibáñez, de Valparaíso, Viña del Mar). The topics addressed have been mainly the visual languages of the pre-Hispanic societies of northern Chile, northwest Argentina, the Bolivian highlands and southern Peru. Within this, she has studied iconography captured in various media (rock art, textiles, hats and identity insignia, hallucinogenic complex, among others). In relation to psychotropic paraphernalia, she investigates its social implications and the appearance of inequality and artisanal specialization in pre-Hispanic Atacama society. Between the years 2011-2024 she worked as an academic at the Institute of Archaeological Research and Museum R.P. Gustavo Le Paige S.J. from the Universidad Católica del Norte, in San Pedro de Atacama. During that period she also joined the faculty of the Doctorate in Anthropology, a postgraduate program of the consortium between the Universidad Católica del Norte and Tarapacá (UCN/UTA), along with serving as a member of the Editorial Committee of the scientific journal Estudios Atacameños as its General Editor (2014-2015) and Editor of the Archeology Line (2018-2024).
