Joan C. Monllau, orthopaedic surgeon of Barcelona (Spain), with expertise in the field of knee surgery, including both degenerative and sports medicine. He completedhis MD at the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1983, and his PhD at the AutònomaUniversity of Barcelona (UAB) in 1999. He authored over 200 articles in peerreviewed journals, and more than 70 book chapters. He has given more than 300national and international lectures and is currently mentoring and supervising several PhD projects.

Head of the knee unit in Hospital del Mar (2004-09), head of the department of Orthopaedic surgery in Hospitalde la Sta Creu i Sant Pau (2009-14) and currently (since 2015) heading thedepartment of Orthopaedic surgery at Parc de Salut Mar (Hospitals del Mar & Esperança). Hehas been Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the UAB (1997-2008) and FullProfessor in the same institution since 2009. Recently he has been nominated as Scientific Advisor of the Barcelona Blood and Tissue Bank (BST).

He is active member in the following societies: the Spanish Arthroscopy Association (AEA), where he was president in the period 2011-13, theSpanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT), the EuropeanSociety of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), in whichhe is currently president, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery andOrthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the SociedadLatinoamericana de Artroscopia, Rodilla y Deporte (SLARD), theInternational Meniscus Reconstruction Experts Forum (IMREF) and the ACL StudyGroup. He is on the editorial board of KSSTA and The Journal of Arthroscopy andRelated Surgery and has been working as a reviewer for several journals,including KSSTA, JEO, Int Orthop, The Knee, JISAKOS, RECOT, to mention some of them.

He was president of the Barcelona 2016 ESSKA biannual congress and was selected to be the Godfather for the 2017 ESSKA-SLARD Travelling Fellowship.

He has won some 17 awards from national and international societies and has been electedhonorary member of the Chilean Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SCHOT), the FrenchArthroscopy Society (SFA), the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery andTraumatology (SECOT), the Portuguese Society of Arthroscopy and SportsTraumatology (SPAT), and the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Artroscopia, Rodilla y Deporte (SLARD).
