Fernando Salinas-Quiroz
About
Dr. Fernando Salinas-Quiroz, PhD (she/they), is a transfemme, neuroqueer, racialized Mexican immigrant whose work sits at the intersection of psychology, education, transgender studies, and social justice. Rooted in Marlene Wayar’s being in gerund and in the furia and ternura travesti voiced by Susy Shock, Lohana Berkins, and Claudia Rodríguez, Dr. Salinas-Quiroz approaches research, teaching, and community work as practices of trans*fer*mation—fierce in resisting erasure, tender in sustaining life.
Her scholarship, spanning more than 53 peer-reviewed publications, five books, and twelve book chapters, has shaped Mexico City’s early childhood education curriculum, pioneered studies on nonbinary children’s understandings of gender, and advanced SOGIE-related parenting research across Latin America, the U.S., and beyond. During her tenure at the National Pedagogic University in Mexico City (2013–2021), they advanced rapidly from Assistant to Full Professor through early reviews, coordinated the Postgraduate Specialization in Comprehensive Sexuality Education, and helped establish the Master’s in Sexuality—contributions that transformed academic and policy landscapes in Mexico.
Now an Assistant Professor in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University, Dr. Salinas-Quiroz leads the Abby and Anna SOGIE Research Group and serves as Associate Director of the SOGIE Health Equity Research Collaborative at Harvard. She is also Board Member of PFLAG National and Board Member and Director of Research at Transformative Schools (TfS) in New York City, while holding an elected seat on the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth. Named a 2025 Young Scholar by the Foundation for Child Development, they continue to inform global policy and practice while embodying tenderness and fury in their commitment to sustaining life and transferming futures.
