Desta Abame Erkalo

Desta Erkalo Abame is a dedicated PhD candidate pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health Research within the Public Health Medicine Department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In addition to his academic pursuits, he is a prominent researcher based in Ethiopia, with a strong focus on public health, reproductive health, and the socio-economic determinants of health. His academic journey includes significant affiliations with Wachemo University (2019–2025) and Haramaya University (2017–2019), where he has contributed to advancing public health research and education.

Abame’s research is particularly impactful in addressing the health challenges prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. His work is characterized by a commitment to tackling pressing public health issues, such as the effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations, including prisoners and HIV-positive women.
