A convenient and reliable method for studying hydrogen bonding with “naked” anions in low-polarity and non-polar solvents is proposed. IR spectral characteristics of the complexes of methanol, used as a standard proton donor, with inorganic and organic anions of different classes are obtained. The difference in stability of such complexes in the gas phase and in solution is discussed. The influence of solvent on the structure and enthalpy of ion-molecular and neutral hydrogen bonds is compared.
