Abstract
Abstract The effect of a low-molecular weight salt on the collapse of weakly charged polymeric networks has been investigated theoretically. The presence of the salt can lead both to a contraction of the specimen's network and also to its swelling. In the first case (when the chains of the network contain charges of a single sign) the ions of the salt are expelled from the network. In the second case (when the chains of the network contain charges of both size in approximately equal amounts) salt is drawn into the network.
