About

Alfred L Chan is professor emeritus of political science and a research fellow at Huron University College, Western University, Canada. He is also a research associate with the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Prior to his appointment at Huron, he taught at the Univ. of Toronto, McGill Univ., Univ. of Calgary, and Carleton Univ.

He has taught courses on Asian politics, comparative politics, international relations, Japanese politics and foreign relations, Soviet politics, comparative communism, and the politics of development. For China, his research and teaching interests include Chinese politics and foreign relations, history, leadership, governance, policymaking and implementation, political culture, citizenship, development, regional politics, Mao studies, and research methodology. He has published in all three leading international journals on China, the China Quarterly, China Journal, and the Journal of Contemporary China.

Chan is the author of Mao’s Crusade: Politics and Policy Implementation in Mao’s Great Leap Forward (Oxford, 2001). His latest book, Xi Jinping: Political Career, Governance, and Leadership, 1953-2018 (Oxford, 2022) adopts a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to unpack the complex Xi phenomenon.

Latest publications include an article (with Paul Nesbitt-Larking) entitled “The Political Leadership of Xi Jinping: Narratives of Integrity Through Ordeal,” Journal of Contemporary China (2023) and a chapter entitled “The Rise and Rule of Xi Jinping, 2012- present” in William Joseph, ed., Politics in China: An Introduction, 4th ed. (Oxford, 2024).
