ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Luís Fernando Dias Bucho is a recent graduate of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) from Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal. He finished his Masters degree in 2021 under the supervision of Prof. João Fernandes (IST) and Prof. Andrea Cavagnino (Politecnico di Torino, Italy), with a dissertation titled “Performance Analysis of a Cryogenic Induction Machine”. With this work he proposed a theoretical and experimental methodology to estimate and validate the electromechanical behaviour of a conventionally designed induction motor totally submerged in liquid nitrogen. From his thesis, which was considered to have important scientific results, two scientific works were submitted: a journal paper on IEEE trans. on Energy Conversion and a digest submitted to IEEE – Energy Conversion Congress & Expo (ECCE2022), both currently in review and co-authored by Luís Bucho, Prof. João Fernandes (IST), Eng. Marco Biasion (Politecnico di Torino), Prof. Silvio Vaschetto (Politecnico di Torino) and Prof. Andrea Cavagnino (Politecnico di Torino). After graduation, and following his interest in research, Luís applied to a research scholarship from IDMEC/LAETA via a public international call, which was awarded to him. He currently works as a researcher studying the applications of new materials to electrical machines, specifically in the application of high temperature superconductors (HTS). He also collaborates with other researchers on the development and optimizations of electrical machines. One example is his participation on the optimization of a synchronous machine with Cobalt-iron alloys (DOI: 10.20944/preprints202203.0321.v1). Currently he looks forward to proceeding with his research career objective by applying to a Ph.D. degree at IST, where he intends to develop superconducting cryogenic induction-synchronous machine, to expand the current specific-power capabilities of electrical machines for aircraft applications.

OTHER PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL SKILLS

Concurrently to his formal education, Luís has been developing his technical and social skills outside the academic environment. Since 2017 Luís has assumed the functions of “Production Manager and Responsible for Logistics and Operations” at Festival MUSA Cascais, a carbon neutral music festival, through his role as Associate Chair at Criativa Association of Carcavelos He is responsible for the planning and operation of the festival’s off-grid power system, communication systems advisor, planning and building of the festival’s grounds as well as assuring clear and objective communication between the production team and the SIRESP emergency system. In 2020, he developed a technical and economic analysis for the conversion of a grid-fed power system of a 463ha cattle ranch operation in Alentejo, Portugal, into a self-consumption photovoltaic system with battery storage. These two projects allowed for a comprehensive consolidation of the technical knowledge related to simulation of multiple complex systems coupled together, particularly simulation of powerflow between generation units, batteries and loads, validation of the simulated results with real data from power transformers and the assessment of economic viability based not only on technical metrics but also based on future business plans from the stakeholders. Furthermore, through his past role as member of the Cascais Municipal Council for the Youth Affairs, Luís has gained substantial social skills regarding work with political and technical players regarding public policy.

Metrics description
h-index
A scientist has an h-index if h of his N publications are cited at least h times each, while the remaining (N - h) publications are cited no more than h times each.
i10-index
The number of the author's publications that received at least 10 links each.
m-index
The researcher's m-index is numerically equal to the ratio of his h-index to the number of years that have passed since the first publication.
o-index
The geometric mean of the h-index and the number of citations of the most cited article of the scientist.
g-index
For a given set of articles, sorted in descending order of the number of citations that these articles received, the g-index is the largest number such that the g most cited articles received (in total) at least g2 citations.
w-index
If w articles of a researcher have at least 10w citations each and other publications are less than 10(w+1) citations, then the researcher's w-index is equal to w.
