About
Assefa Desalew Fentaw
I, Assefa Desalew Fentaw, was born in 1989. I am an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Child Health Nursing at the College of Health and Medical Sciences, Haramaya University, Ethiopia. I am passionate about research and education aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Haramaya University (2012) and a Master’s in Pediatrics and Child Health Nursing from Addis Ababa University (2016). My experience includes developing and reviewing pediatric and neonatal nursing curricula at both master's and undergraduate levels nationally. I am a member of the Ethiopian national licensure examination committee and work on task analysis, blueprint development and revision, item development and revision, and standardization. I also collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Education of Ethiopia on pediatric nursing competency, blueprint, and quality standard development and revision. I served as the head of the pediatric nursing department for over five years.
Currently, I am pursuing a joint PhD at Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) in the Netherlands and Haramaya University. My PhD research primarily focuses on Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN), particularly examining its burden in Eastern Ethiopia and improving access to effective interventions to address the problem and improve the survival of the newborn. I am dedicated to improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes, with a specific focus on preventing maternal RhD alloimmunization, improving access to anti-D immunoglobulins, and identifying and addressing hidden maternal and child health challenges in low-resource settings. Additionally, I am currently coordinating the African Initiative for Rh Disease Eradication, a project aimed at eradicating the burden of HDFN across Africa.
My previous more than 45 works have been published in peer-reviewed journals, contributing valuable insights to the field of maternal and neonatal health.
