About

Vulstan James Shedura is a dedicated field epidemiologist, public health specialist, and research scientist with expertise in infectious diseases, public health, and epidemiology. He holds a master's degree in epidemiology and laboratory management from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) and a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technology from International Medical and Technological University (IMTU).

With over 100 certified short courses completed, his areas of expertise extend across public health, infectious diseases, health systems strengthening, quality management systems, epidemiology, and scientific writing. Vulstan has over six years of experience in medical research, laboratory diagnostics, and training medical students at the Southern Zone Referral Hospital in Mtwara, Tanzania. He has worked on numerous projects, including COVID-19 surveillance, antimicrobial resistance research, and hepatitis B epidemiology, and has actively contributed to national health policy development.

He has presented research at leading national and international conferences, including ICASA, ASLM, EDCTP, AFENET, and the World Union Conference on Lung Health, and has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Best Final Year MSc ELM Student Award at MUHAS. His research portfolio includes multiple peer-reviewed publications covering influenza, HIV, syphilis, HBV infection, laboratory medicine, non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and the epidemiology of motor traffic injuries.

Currently, he serves as the head of the Department of Clinical Research, Training, and Consultancy at the Ministry of Health, Southern Zone Referral Hospital, Mtwara, Tanzania, where he leads clinical research, training programs, consultancies, and public health initiatives aimed at strengthening epidemiological surveillance, infectious disease control, and antimicrobial stewardship.
