Prof. A.A. Totolian began his career as a researcher back in 1975. Still as a student of the Leningrad First Medical Institute, he carried out a study of macrophage migration inhibition reaction with blood serum of patients with lung pathology and a study of some factors of functional activity of blood cells in patients with bronchial asthma.
A.A. Totolian’s PhD thesis “Study of Some Factors of Cell and Humoral Immunity Response in Patients with Bronchial Asthma During Treatment” defended in 1987 actually covers two fields: “pulmonology” and “allergology and immunology”.
After defending his thesis, A.A. Totolian was appointed the head of the clinical immunology laboratory at Acad. I.P. Pavlov Leningrad First Medical Institute. It determined the choice of research for the nearest years: developing methods of immune status evaluation, including those used in mass immunological examinations. From 1987 to 1993, A.A. Totolian has been the supervisor of 2 PhDs, published 56 works and patented 3 inventions.
In 1997, A.A. Totolian defended his second doctoral thesis “Pathogenetic Approach to Laboratory Diagnosis of Immune Pathologies” where his long experience of immunological examination was generalized and main provisions and principles of pathogenetic approach to choosing biological material for immunological examinations of patient with different immune pathologies were substantiated and stated for the first time.
In 2003, A.A. Totolian was given the rank of Professor of Allergology and Immunology and appointed the director of the Molecular Medicine Research Center at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation at Acad. I.P. Pavlov St-Petersburg First Medical Institute. He has been actively developing molecular and genetic research in fundamental and applied immunology there.
Such are the priority fields also for the Molecular Immunology and Seroepidemiology Laboratory of Saint-Petersburg Pasteur Institute, headed by A.A. Totolian since 2009.
The results of research on methods of immunological diagnosis have been successfully introduced in different laboratories and institutions. They have also been introduced at the federal level. Eleven specialized immunological programs for evaluation of immunodiagnosis criteria were developed under his supervision for the first time in Russia and introduced in the Federal System of External Evaluation for Quality of Laboratory Tests since 2002.
For the last decade, the principles of evaluation of the chemokine system in applied research using molecular and biological, immunochemical and functional methods together with multiplex analysis have been defined in A.A. Totolian’s and his pupils’ works.
The main results of A.A. Totolian’s research were published in more than 230 works, 9 inventor’s certificates and patents, in the monograph in 5 volumes “Cells of Immune System”, in such monographs as “Immunological Laboratory Diagnosis of Rheumatic Diseases”, ‘Immunological laboratory diagnosis of autoimmune diseases”, “Mechanisms of Bronchi and Lung Inflammation” and “Anti-inflammatory Therapy» and General Allergology, as well as in 21 doctoral theses of his pupils.
A.A. Totolian introduces main results of his research in practice by publishing guidelines, reference books and handbooks for practicing doctors, holding Annual Al-Russian Forums and Schools in Immunology.
Professor A.A. Totolian is a versatile scientist, one of the leading specialist in immunology.
