Professor of Medical Education and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist
Rakesh Patel is Professor of Medical Education at the Institute of Health Sciences Education, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. He is also Head of MBBS at Queen Mary University of London and Deputy Director of the Institute of Health Sciences Education.
He completed a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Dundee in 2011. His thesis investigated the experiential-relevance of self-regulated learning in underperformance, and described a conceptual model for understanding the student failing experience at medical school. He completed a Doctorate in Medical Education research and his thesis investigated the use of virtual patients created from web-based simulation for developing clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills among novices at medical school. In 2012, he was appointed NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Medical Education at the University of Leicester. His research investigated the effectiveness of a multifaceted educational intervention for increasing the prescribing performance and safety behaviours of junior doctors across hospitals in the NHS.
He was appointed Clinical Associate Professor in Medical Education in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Nottingham. In that role, he was Course Director for the Masters (MMedSci) in Medical Education and Academic Programme Director for academic trainees in medical education. He was also Postgraduate Taught Courses and Postgraduate Research Lead in the Medical Education Centre, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham. In these roles, his responsibilities extended into faculty development and leading the 'train the trainers’ programme at Nottingham and his research included empirical studies in both underperformance and clinical reasoning.
He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a current Education Associate of the General Medical Council. He is a committee member for the Technology-enhanced learning committee of Association for Medical Education in Europe, and he is currently an external examiner at the University of Newcastle and the University of Oxford, and previously held external examinerships at the University of East Anglia and the University of Glasgow.
In his clinical role, he is Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust.
His current research interests include:
- Clinical diagnostic decision-making in complex healthcare environments
- Enhancing the performance and resilience of healthcare professionals using insights from sports psychology, business and education
- Technology-enabled learning and quality improvement using multifaceted educational interventions
