About
I am a professor of Neuroprosthetics at Newcastle University. My research involves developing implantable systems to treat neurological conditions. My primary clinical objective is to develop a visual prosthesis to restore sight to the blind.
I graduated with a BSc (1st Class) in applied physics from Liverpool University in 1996. I then achieved an MRes in surface science, also from Liverpool University in 1997. In 2001, I received a PhD in bioimaging from the Japan Advanced Institute for Science and Technology. I then spent a year in the software industry, followed by 2 post-docs at Imperial College. Then in 2005, I received an RCUK fellowship leading to a lectureship and senior lectureship also at Imperial College. I then moved to Newcastle University in 2010, becoming a full professor in 2019.
I have graduated over 20 PhD students and been involved in a number of large projects such as OptoNeuro (FP7, 2010-2014) CANDO (EPSRC/Wellcome, 2014-2022) and Gultronics (EPSRC 2025-2028). In all of these technologies, I aim to create implantable biomedical devices.
