Kumar Biswajit Debnath

I am a Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the School of Architecture, University of Technology Sydney, Australia. As an architect, I investigate bio-integrated and bioclimatic passive building design for climate change adaptation and mitigation. I have extensive experience in biomimetic design, bio-based material development, and building physics modelling and simulation. I am also interested in the decarbonisation of energy systems, especially within the built environment in developing countries. In my current research project, BioCOOL (Data-driven Bio-fabricated Carbon-Negative Building Skin for Passive Cooling), I am developing a weather-resistant building skin made from agricultural waste and mycelium composites. The goal is to create a biomimetic, carbon-negative solution that can passively cool buildings through evaporation. This project involves interdisciplinary research and innovation in building skin design, bio-based material development, and large-scale prototyping for climate resilience. BioCOOL is co-sponsored by the School of Architecture, Faculty of Design, Architecture, and Building (DAB), and the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Sciences at UTS. This project should benefit climate change resilience and the goals of achieving net zero by reducing active energy demand and embodied carbon in the building sector and fulfilling SDGs 7, 11, 12, and 13.
