Dr. Jessica Calvo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where she also serves as Secretary of the department and Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering. With over two decades of research experience, Dr. Calvo has established herself as a leading expert in advanced materials, particularly in the field of steels and metal processing technologies.

Dr. Calvo began her research career in 2002, completing her Ph.D. at UPC in 2006 with a thesis on the effects of residual elements and impurities on the ductility and hot embrittlement mechanisms in construction steels. Her doctoral research was enriched by international collaborations, including research stays at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico City and McGill University in Canada. Following her Ph.D., she pursued postdoctoral research at McGill University, where she investigated the impact of small deformations at elevated temperatures on the mechanical properties of microalloyed steels for pipelines used in gas and oil transport.

Since joining UPC in 2008, Dr. Calvo has expanded her research portfolio to include Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS), with a focus on TWIP (Twinning Induced Plasticity) steels, which are critical for automotive applications due to their exceptional mechanical properties. She has led multiple high-impact projects funded by organizations such as AGAUR, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and the European Commission’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). Her work has deepened understanding of metallurgical processes and their influence on material performance, contributing significantly to both academic knowledge and industrial applications.

In addition to her work on TWIP steels, Dr. Calvo has spearheaded research into Quench & Partitioning (QP) steels, superalloys for optimized performance through tailored processing routes, and more recently, metal 3D printing technologies. She currently leads several projects investigating incremental rotary forming processes and continuous casting methods for steel production. Her groundbreaking research has been supported by numerous grants from national and international agencies, including five projects on metal additive manufacturing.

Dr. Calvo’s academic output includes over 70 peer-reviewed articles published in leading journals, along with more than 40 presentations at national and international conferences. She is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of researchers, having co-supervised seven completed doctoral theses and currently overseeing two more.

Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Calvo has actively fostered international collaborations through research stays at institutions such as Universidade Federal de São Carlos (Brazil) and Colorado School of Mines (USA), where she participated in the prestigious Fulbright Program in 2024.
