Development of an open database of vertebrate tissue metabolomes and analysis of factors affecting the composition of metabolites in tissues

+
Metabolomics is one of the most rapidly developing modern post-genomic branches of science and is used in the study of a wide range of pathologies of humans, animals and plants. The proposed project is a continuation of the first extensive work on the creation of an open database and on the systemic metabolomic study of tissues of various animals of the vertebrate subtype (Vertebrata). At the moment, the database contains information on concentrations (in moles per gram of tissue) of the most represented metabolites in the lenses of various vertebrates. It is planned to study the tissues of vertebrates of five classes – fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals – animals very different in structure and physiological characteristics, in order to clarify the mechanisms of evolution of biochemical processes in tissues due to both the general development of the animal world and adaptation to a specific habitat, including the ecological situation. It is planned to establish metabolomic profiles for such tissues as blood, liver, heart, brain, and lens. To solve the tasks of the project, the most modern methods of analytical chemistry for quantitative metabolomic analysis will be applied, including 2 types of chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry. The scientific literature almost completely lacks quantitative data on the metabolic composition of animal tissues, which guarantees the novelty and high demand for the expected results. The results obtained can be used in a wide range of biological fields, including systems and evolutionary biology, ecology and biochemistry, as well as in veterinary medicine and medicine.
