Thomas P Schaer
About
Thomas catalyzes and supports the translation of science and technology into valuable solutions for his clients, patients and consumers across the medical device, consumer and health tech sectors.
His journey started in human medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland with a deep and everlasting impact by mentor Prof. Maurice E. Mueller. Since then, has been part of high paced surgical teams treating racehorses, worked with industry to develop and gain approval for medical device products and constantly seeks new opportunities to create value for his organization.
His program leads and collaborates on many federal and industry funded projects at the intersection of science and the rapid advancements in health-care technology. Over the past decade, the Institute for Medical Translation at Penn Vet New Bolton Center was built from ground up to create an ecosystem for multidisciplinary collaboration and the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students in the translational and regulatory sciences. This ecosystem represents the bridge that supports the continuum from discovery to invention to innovation in medical translation. The SERVICE CORE designs and executes studies from proof of concept to pivotal IND/IDE-enabling trials (GLP/VICH-9) in support of regulatory submissions and offers a wide variety of animal models (Animal Core). The RESEARCH CORE initiates and collaborates with academia on hypothesis driven research using animal models in support of investigations in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, orthopedic trauma, spinal deformities, microbial-host interactions and biofilm infections.
