Pierre Layrolle
About
Pierre Layrolle has extensive experience in tissue engineering research both in industry and academia. He obtained his PhD in biomaterials in 1994 at the Polytechnic National Institute of Toulouse and his thesis was awarded the Leopold Escande prize. He completed his postdoctoral studies for 2 years in Japan and later joined for 5 years the tissue engineering company IsoTis in The Netherlands prior to enter Inserm as Director of Research in Nantes, France. In 2021, he moved to Toulouse Neuromaging Center to conduct research on 3D bioprinting human complex tissues and organs on chip by using stem cells encapsulated in hydrogels.
Prof. Layrolle was the coordinator or partner of several European projects (FP7 REBORNE, H2020 PARAGEN, MAXIBONE, ORTHOUNION, Horizon Europe ORTHO ALLO UNION) aimed at regenerating bone defects using a combination of stem cells and biomaterials. His team has conducted a vast amount of pre-clinical studies and 6 clinical trials have been performed under his guidance in orthopaedic, maxillofacial and dental surgeries. His work is routinely highlighted in national and international media.
Prof. Layrolle is inventor of 15 patents and co-founder of the spinoff company Biomedical Tissues that produces innovative medical devices such as a synthetic resorbable membrane for guided bone regeneration. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications (23,000 citations, h-index 81) and is a member of the Editorial board of several journals (Acta Biomaterialia, Biomedical Materials, J Mater Sci Mater Med, Scientific Reports, Front Bioeng Biotech, J Funct Biomaterials) and regularly invited to present at international conferences. He has also organised several conferences such as the European Society for Biomaterials in 2006, Bioceramics 20 in 2007, the European Orthopaedic Research Society in 2014 and the TERMIS-EU workshop '3D bioprinting in cancer research' in 2019.
