Quantum Theory of Condensed Matter (Solid State Physics) with focus on quantum effects in low- dimensional many-body systems in and out-of-equilibrium which includes semiconducting and magnetic systems which show topological quantum effects. A substantial part of work is related to quantum in- formation processing–quantum computing and quantum technology in solid state systems with focus on spin qubits and related physics and quantum information aspects. The work of the group spans a wide range of topics, from very fundamental to applied, and extends from pure physics and maths to pure quantum computing.

Loss founded the field of spin-based quantum computing in 1998 (together with D. DiVincenzo) (Mile- stone paper) with many subsequent pioneering contributions, especially on decoherence and noise in many-body systems; introduced hole spin qubits in 2005; triggering many programs worldwide in- and outside academia; made numerous seminal contributions to quantum spintronics as well as to topological quantum matter such as Majorana and parafermion platforms in strongly interacting electronic and magnetic systems; made many important predictions verified in leading labs worldwide and launched successful academic careers of many group members.
