Sergiu Coseri

Dr. Sergiu Coseri is the head of the "Polyaddition and Photochemistry" department in „Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry Iasi.

He received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 2001 from Romanian Academy and Technical University Iasi.

He then continued as a postdoctoral fellow at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada for one year, and then, for another two years, between 2003-2005 he was Visiting Fellow in Canadian Government Laboratories, NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), at National Research Council Ottawa, Canada, under the supervision of Keith U. Ingold, in the field of kinetic and reaction mechanisms involving nitroxyl free radicals.

After receiving a NATO reintegration grant, in 2005, he moved back to the „Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry Iasi, starting his own research group in the field of chemical functionalization of polysaccharides, under mild and environmentally friendly conditions. He published several new protocols for the selective oxidation of polysaccharides (cellulose, starch, pullulan), and also he is involved in the field of high-tech applications of functionalized polysaccharides products, such as drug delivery and protein immobilization based on biomacromolecule platforms. On July 7, 2016, he defended his habilitation thesis with the title: "Nitroxyl radicals mediated functionalization of biopolymers: from synthesis to application".
