Shihab, Uddin

Dr. Shihab Uddin, assistant professor of the bioengineering department at KFUPM, is an enthusiastic multidisciplinary educator who actively supervises and instructs graduate and undergraduate students in these fields.  He is a highly motivated research scientist with a track record of success in academia & industry and has experience working with scientists from diverse backgrounds around the world. He has personal expertise dealing with animal models, computational chemistry, and wet chemistry. He conducted extensive research in the domains of synthetic chemistry, biomaterials, nanotechnology, drug design, formulations & delivery (peptide, protein, & mRNA), immunotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, analytical method development & validation of different pharmaceutical products (liquids, solids, and volatile formulations), diabetics, cancer biology, and vaccination. His passion for bio-nanotechnology is evident in his youthful and enthusiastic nature as a budding researcher.

He received his PhD-Eng from Kyushu University, Japan, in 2021. Following that, he had the honour of being hired as a postdoctoral associate in the chemical engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and served till 2023. He also received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. majors in biochemistry and molecular biology. Following the completion of his Master's degree, he started his career as an associate scientist in the R&D department at Square Pharmaceutical Ltd.,(FDA-plant) from 2015–2018.

He was awarded the NST-BD Fellowship and MEXT-Japan Fellowship. During his PhD, he concentrated his research on synthetic chemistry and nanodrug delivery systems for cancer treatment, both in vitro and in vivo. He was subsequently employed as a postdoctoral fellow at MIT-USA, where he contributed to two state-of-the-art biomedical projects: the development of lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based mRNA vaccines and high-concentration therapeutic antibody formulations continuous to manufacturing, funded by Takeda-USA and USFDA-USA.
