Ishanu Chattopadhyay

Ishanu Chattopadhyay is an expert in automated data analysis, machine learning, and computational aspects of data science. He currently serves as an Assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Professor Chattopadhyay's research focuses on the core algorithmic principles of large-scale data analysis, particularly in domains where minimal human intervention is warranted or desired, and where domain expertise is sparse. Leading the laboratory for Zero Knowledge Discovery, Chattopadhyay is interested in unraveling complex phenomena in biology, biomedicine, and human social interactions. Chattopadhyay earned separate master’s degrees in Engineering and Mathematics, and his doctoral degree in Engineering from Pennstate, and completed his postdoctoral training in Computer Science and Engineering at Cornell University, before joining the faculty at UChicago in 2016. His research has been funded by the US Department of Defense, the National Institute for Health, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, and his work has been published in top peer-reviewed journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences (PNAS), and Science Advances, Nature Communications, Nature Human Behavior, the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), and journals of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Dr. Chattopadhyay won the prestigious Young Faculty Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2020.
