About

Inició sus trabajos de investigación en la ETS de Ingenieros Agrónomos de la UPM (ETSIA) a principios de los años 90, coincidiendo con el advenimiento de la PCR. El foco la caracterización mediante marcadores moleculares PCR de genotipos de vid difícilmente distinguibles morfológicamente y a través de ensayos isoenzimáticos. Esto constituyó la base de la Tesis Doctoral dirigida por el prof. Jesús Ortíz y la Dra. Yolanda Gogorcena. Desarrollada entre los años 1992 y 1996, y que propició dos estancias de investigación (Laboratoire de Biologie Végétale et Biotechnologie de la Université de Nantes; Dept. Horticultural Sciences en Cornell University) y entre otras una publicación (Euphytica 101(1):117-125) citada más de 130 veces.

Tras un periodo relativamente corto como becario INIA en la finca de investigación y experimentación agraria de la Comunidad de Madrid, El Encín, inició una estancia posdoctoctoral de algo más de dos años en la University of California, Davis. Su trabajo en el grupo del prof. Richard Michelmore tuvo como objetivo principal saturar de marcadores el entorno del gen de resistencia a Rhizomonas suberifaciens en lechuga. Cuando a principios de siglo la genómica empieza a abrirse camino, propone por primera vez marcadores SNP en lechuga (Genome 46(6):1059-1069). Uno de los marcadores encontrados resultó derivar de un peculiar transposón de. tipo hAT. Este hallazgo permitió caracterizar, en colaboración con el prof. Blake Mayers, de la University of Delaware, una nueva familia de transposones, hATpin (PMB 58(6): 869-886) que abrió caminos de investigación (PMB 78(4-5): 393-405).

Tras las investigaciones posdoctorales, retornó como profesor ayudante a la ETSIA incorporándose al grupo de investigación dirigido por la prof. Ángeles Delibes, sobre resistencias a estrés biótico en trigo. Objetivo, la búsqueda de marcadores moleculares para los genes de resistencia Heterodera avenae. De los proyectos con lechuga y trigo una enseñanza fundamental: el fenotipado es el cuello de botella que frena muchos estudios genéticos. La colaboración con el Dr. Oscar Grillo, experto en análisis de imagen de semillas de la Stazione Sperimentaledi Granicoltura per la Sicilia, y con la nematóloga del Instituto de Ciencias Ambientales del CSIC, Dra. Marifé Andrés, permitió desarrollar un método semiautomático para caracterizar el fenotipo de la resistencia al nematodo (Crop Protec. 81: 85-91).

Mi experiencia con genes de resistencia y elementos móviles en plantas me lleva a una colaboración con un grupo de cultivo de tejidos vegetales de la UPM que dirige el prof. César Pérez. El objetivo: detección de variantes somaclonales en crisantemo. En una de las líneas, se encuentran tres variantes que inicialmente se vinculan a polimorfismo somaclonal, pero se demuestra que tales polimorfismos han sido causados por la contaminación de los extractos de ADN vegetal con ADN de bacterias del género Bacillus. Se diseñan ensayos de PCR para la detección de ADN bacteriano en background ADN vegetal (Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Cult. 119: 533-541).

En el año 2006 sacó la plaza de Prof. Titular, y en 2009 empieza a impartir clases sobre el incipiente análisis genómico de asociación en el Máster UPM en Recursos Fitogenéticos. De esa experiencia docente deriva la vigente colaboración en investigación con un grupo de genómica de melocotonero que dirige la Dra. Gogorcena en la Estación Experimental Aula Dei en Zaragoza en el marco del proyecto: “Aproximaciones gen-ómicas para la mejora de melocotonero”.

Durante algo más tres años desde el mes de abril de 2016, asume el cargo de Subdirector de Atención al Estudiante en la ETSIAAB-UPM. Desde el mes de febrero de 2020 ocupa la Dirección del Banco de Germoplasma Vegetal – UPM “César Gómez Campo” con el objetivo de digitalizar sus colecciones y potenciar su uso en pro de la climate smart agriculture.
