About
Helena Peres (HP) has been an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, the University of Porto, and a Research Nutritionist for the Center of Marine and Environmental Research (CIMAR), University of Porto, Portugal. HP received a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto in 2000 and did a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Aquatic Animal Health Research Laboratory of the US Department of Agriculture in Auburn, Alabama, USA.
HP is a member of the evaluation panel of projects submitted to QREN (Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional), Portugal, and to INCT Program (National Institutes of Science and Technology) by CNPq (National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development), Brazil.
HP's research specialization is fish nutrition, and her main research interests are fish nutrition and physiology of fish aquaculture species; development of novel feed ingredients and functional additives through the valorization of agro-industrial by-products and underutilized biomass; nutritional strategies to improve fish performance, feed utilization, and disease resistance and nutritional tools for aquaculture's blue growth and reduction of carbon footprint.
HP has been involved as PI, work package leader, or team member in several projects during her professional career, with a strong connection with national and international industry.
HP published 126 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 74 scientific papers in conference proceedings, 4 book chapters, and 1 European Patent. HP has supervised or co-supervised 42 graduate students, 51 MS thesis students, and 24 Ph.D. students (17 Ph.D. + 7 Brazilian Ph.D. Sandwich theses).
