Patrick Berche

Patrick Berche (MD, PhD) microbiologist, Professor Emeritus of the University of Paris Cité, former Head of the Microbiology Department of Necker-Enfants malades Hospital (1990-2014), Director of the Inserm U411 research unit (1990-2002), Dean of Paris Descartes Faculty of Medicine (2000-2014), He has held administrative positions at Inserm (Scientific Director 1996-2001), Institut de Veille Sanitaire (President of the Scientific Committee of CNR 1996-2001), Ministry of Defense (member of the Scientific Council of Defense to the Minister of Defense (2002-2008), member of the National Advisory Council for Biosafety to the Prime Minister (2015-), Director General of the Pasteur Institute of Lille (2014-2018). He is member of the French Academy of Medicine and elected in 2022 President of Commission 6 (One Human and Animal Health, Infectious Diseases, Vaccines (health determinants, environment, food and nutrition, tropical pathology). He is president of the French Society of History of Medicine (2022-2024). He has published 20 books, notably on the history of medicine. His research work has focused on the molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases and on clinical microbiology. He has published 227 original papers in international journals (23078 citations, H 78). He has been involved in numerous international missions (China, Colombia, Ecuador, Morocco, Tunisia, Central America, Japan, India...) and in humanitarian field activities. He set up and managed as volunteer Scientific Director from 1992 to 2000 a humanitarian project to fight against childhood diarrhoea and cholera in South America (PROCED), initiated with the AP-HP and WHO and financed by the EEC.
