Research directions

The study of the chemical composition, biological activity of rare species of halophytes of the Baltic Sea, the use of plant biotechnology methods to obtain tissue culture and species conservation

+
Many higher plants are sources of valuable secondary metabolites, the role of which is dramatically increasing in modern industry (pharmaceutical, food, agricultural). At the same time, the stocks of most medicinal plants are limited, many of them are rare, endangered and/or become so due to uncontrolled harvesting of raw materials and anthropogenic changes in the natural environment. In this regard, the most urgent problem is the assessment of the stability of populations, their productive potential, the development of methods for effective reproduction of species and methods for obtaining valuable metabolites by alternative routes. The project is aimed at solving such tasks as the study of biologically active substances of rare species of halophytes – potential raw materials for industrial production; the development of methods and approaches based on plant biotechnologies for obtaining cell and tissue cultures of plants, as well as microclonal reproduction and cultivation of rare species in vitro in order to preserve species.
